The latest round of wrestling rankings are here with small changes in the team standings but a shakeup in the individual rankings.
The South Carolina Wrestling Coaches Association released its list of the 20 best teams from each classification on Friday and featured the same seven Lexington County programs from the previous ranking.
Three of the seven teams moved down a few spots but the rest remained in the same spot. Lexington dropped one spot, going from 14th to 15th in 5A. Gilbert’s boys and girls dropped, the boys going from sixth to eighth, and the girls from ninth to 13th.
The biggest change this time was the rankings of individual athletes, with some moving up and others down. In the December edition, 36 Chronicle Country athletes were ranked, but this time the number is 30.
Chapin remains the highest-ranked team in the county, coming in at No. 2 in all of 5A. Unlike last time, the Eagles lead the county with the most ranked athletes with five. Despite taking the lead, the Eagles had six athletes listed in their weight class's top wrestlers last time.
River Bluff, which previously had the most ranked wrestlers, remains third in 5A. They had seven athletes listed last time but had four drop out this time. They did gain a new addition in Cael Edwards, who is ranked No. 7 in the 138-pound weight class.
All four Gilbert athletes stayed in their weight-class rankings. No. 1 overall wrestlers Colton Travis and Johnathan Brentlinger kept their top spots. Devin Lirgg went from fifth to eighth, but Hayden Schroeder was bumped to second from third.
Dutch Fork, White Knoll and Lexington have three wrestlers in their weight classes top eight at 5A. Airport has three in 4A and Pelion has three at 2A/1A. Swansea and Irmo are the only other schools from the area with a ranked wrestler, with two at Swansea and one at Irmo.
Swansea is the only one of those schools to add to their total, having just one wrestler ranked last time. Mekhi Hampton entered this week in the 132-pound weight class.
The next drop of wrestling rankings is expected to be released Jan 31 and will be the last release of team and individual rankings before state qualifiers.
