That’s 12 years old in human years. About the same age of many of the students he’ll get to serve in Lexington County.
The Cayce Police Department has welcomed K-9 Fletcher to the team.
He’s a cute Labrador Retriever thrilled to welcome Lexington County students back to school.
According to the release from the City of Cayce, Fletcher and his handler, Senior SRO/K9 Daniel Green, are serving Lexington School District Two schools.
The pair recently completed basic handler training at Person-Borne Detection K9. The four-legged police puppy is specifically trained in traditional and person-borne firearm detection, but, according to the release, the school resource officers say that “Fletcher’s training is more of a deterrent and preventative measure than a direct response to a specific concern or need.”
“While there is not a concern of firearms being an issue; we know that our students and teachers love the presence of our K9s at our Cayce schools, and that K9s are proven to be a proactive safety measure in our schools,” Green said in the release.
The duo will continue trainings and are excited to be in Lexington Two schools.
"When the Cayce Police Department approached the district about the idea of incorporating a K9 into the SRO program to detect firearms, we recognized it as another opportunity to enhance our school safety measures," Santana Sanguiliano, Lexington Two's director of security and risk, said in the release. "Fletcher, like Cayce's other K9s, will be a valuable resource to foster communication between students and law enforcement, while educating them on the importance of 'seeing something and saying something.' We appreciate our ongoing law enforcement partnerships and the innovative ways we work together to ensure a safe learning environment."
