Lexington County School District 1 announced Friday that Jennifer Miller will be its new chief financial officer. 

According to a release, the board approved the hiring on May 10. She joins the district effective July 1.

Miller previously served as chief financial officer at the Sumter School District. She was the second departure in short order for the district, which is also seeking a new superintendent after the board told previous district head Penelpe Martin-Knox to Leave her post with prorated pay four months before her contract ended. 

Brenda Hafner, chief of schools in Sumter and recently the district’s interim superintendent was announced Thursday as the new deputy superintendent for Dorchester School District 2 in Summerville..

Miller became the Sumter School District's CFO in July 2018 and has been instrumental in helping to build the district's fund balance to $32.6 million through fiscal year 2021. That is a level at which it has never been before, and it comes after the 2016 audit showed the district's fund balance at $106,449, revealing millions in overspending.

Miller has been an accounting professional for 21 years and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2001 with a triple major in accounting, finance and insurance and risk management. She became a certified public accountant in 2004.

She comes to a district in Lexington that is also going through some changes.

District 1’s superintendent, Greg Little, announced his resignation in April. He is moving on to take a job as vice president of strategic partnerships and innovation with the S.C. Technical College System. His resignation is effective June 30.

In addition to Little, the district announced May 4 that Jeffrey Salters, its chief operations officer, will retire effective Sept. 8.
