Popular Christian singer and songwriter Lawrence Chewning will be performing a free concert on Sept. 8 at 10 a.m. at Faith United Methodist Church located at 5151 Sunset Boulevard.
Chewning is most famous for writing the popular hymn, "The Anchor Holds," which was popularized by singer Ray Boltz. He also wrote another popular hymn, "At the Foot of the Cross."
Chewning grew up on a farm in Lee County and was drawn to singing after experiencing an offshoot of the 1970 Asbury Revival. After that, he and his friends began traveling as the band, the Fishermen, where they shared testimonies and songs, increasingly written by Chewning, the press release read.
He retired as an adoption specialist in 2018 and currently performs with his band, Damascus Road, and also hosts a weekly podcast, called "Me and My 88 Friends."
