10-digit calling in 803 area code

803 area code customers will need to use the area code in addition to the 7-digit phone number in making local calls.
The move to 10-digit calling is due to the new 839 area code that will cover the same geographic area.
If you fail to dial all 10 digits for local calls you will hear a recording telling you to hang up and re-dial.
Windstream can assign numbers with the 839 area code for new telephone lines beginning May 26.
