Adult literacy tutoring program closes its doors

Posted

A Midlands adult literacy tutoring program has closed.

It was known originally as the Columbia Literacy Council and renamed Turning Pages into Possibilities.

With trained volunteer tutors, it served youth and adults with reading, writing, English as a 2nd Language, General Education Diploma test preparation, math and computer skills instruction.

Its services were free in Lexington and Richland counties. Tutors worked 1-on-1 with their students.

“Turning Pages closure is not entirely a result of lack of funds,” said Scott Adams, a board member.

“The organization received some funds as a result of the efforts of its new Director Miriam Calmaro.

“There is still a tremendous need. Some tutors will maintain ongoing relationships with their learners, which shows the commitment of the tutors.

“At some point, the community or the state will see the need for investment in adult learning. Turning Pages provided a resource that is unmatched.”
