For the third time in five months, Batesburg-Leesville High School will have someone different leading the football program.
The Lexington County School District 3 Board of Trustees approved Tuesday night the hiring of Greg Lawson as head coach during a special meeting.
Lawson replaces Gene Cathcart, who was initially hired in January to replace Gary Adams.
When asked about the reason for Cathcart declining to continue as head coach, the district only stated "personal matters" as the cause of his resignation.
Cathcart has not responded to interview requests from the  Chronicle since the announcment of his resignation. District 3 has also declined requests regarding the departure.
Lawson brings over three decades of coaching experience, including serving as assistant under state championship coaches Phil Strickland, Shell Dula and Mike Anthony during stints at Palmetto, Laurens and Gaffney high schools.
Lawson was named the 2012 South Carolina Football Coaches Association’s Upstate 4A Coach of the Year and 2013 District Officials Coach of the Year. His last coaching stint was at Hemingway High School, where he posted a 26-11 record in three seasons.
Lawson also led the Tigers to the Class A boys basketball title in 2017. He takes over a Panthers' program which has not won a state title since 2013 under Jerry Brown. It has won seven overall and last made the finals in 2016 under now-Lexington head coach Perry Woolbright.
