Are you prepared for Hurricane Season 2020 through November?

Tropical storm Isaias came early in the season and gave us a preview of what is possibly to come. We are fortunate

We are fortunate when we can escape major destruction from these yearly threats.

Gov. Henry McMaster has said, “Flooding from widespread torrential rains is one of the most deadly and destructive hazards associated with tropical storms and hurricanes. High winds and tornadoes can cause severe damage to buildings and homes.”

All of us should take time this week to prepare for a potential tropical storm or hurricane landfall, review family emergency plans, develop a disaster supply kit, reviewing insurance policies and talk with your family about being ready for a disaster.”

This year, we should include covid-19 safety precautions in all our plans.

Our 1st priority should be to protect ourselves from a potential hurricane if an evacuation is issued, said SC Emergency Management Division Director Kim Stenson.

The 20th annual SC Hurricane Guide will be available for download at scemd.org

Printed editions of the Guide will be in all Walgreens stores statewide, at coastal DMV offices and in newspapers from Columbia to the coast beginning June 7.

We remember Hurricane Hugo Sept, 22, 1989 that hit the Charleston area. Many have stories to tell about that experience but SC is strong, resilient and recovers.

Lexington was shocked August 16, 1994, with the tornadoes that made a path of destruction through our town. We still remember where we were at that moment and our reaction to this eerie sight and sound. Fortunately, no lives were lost and we have overcome their damaging effects.

Now here’s a happy story from 2 ladies. Sheilah and Patty of the Oak Grove area do a good deed for the beauty of our community every day. In retirement, they begin their day with gathering gloves, bags, a bucket and a grabber. They walk the Oak Grove area to the flea market and then the other way picking up trash. They are getting healthy exercise and

They are getting healthy exercise and cleaning up our streets. They say sometimes they are greeted with a honk, waves and thumbs up. Some children call them the “trash ladies” and they will come up to them and give a big smile and “thank you”.

Mission Lexington is excited to highlight August’s Church, Board and Volunteer of the Month for contributions to the mission:

• Lexington Baptist is Church of the Month for consistently donating to the Food Pantry, support financially and serving as hosts for the Volunteer Dinner the past several years.

“We have been blessed with lunches from the church during covid as a thank you for the work we do for neighbors,” said Executive Director Robin Bowers.

• Boiling Springs United Methodist Church Pastor Ken Prill is Board Member of the Month for serving as mission secretary and 2 days a week in the thrift store.

• Edna McKelvey is Volunteer of the Month for organizing shoes, purses and books for the thrift store.

Anne Bull reports there’s a baaaaad kid in Lexington. He’s so bad that law enforcement was called. Calhoun was stuck in a tree and hollered all night. Neighbors called the law thinking someone was being hurt. After an investigation, it was discovered that Calhoun, Carl and Carolyn Jordan’s goat, was guilty. After being returned to his pen, the goat got out again and once again got his foot caught in the fork of the tree. The Jordan’s have now cut the tree down and Calhoun has found that the grass is not always greener on the other side.

On everyone’s mind is covid-19, wearing masks, already showing positive effects and football and safe school openings. I am sure authorities are researching and planning what will be best for our people.
