Koon's Watch

Halloween is a special time for youngsters to imagine being the superheroes or princesses they love, a time to celebrate with friends and sweet treats.

You can take steps to help your family members stay safe as they head out to trick-or-treat and ensure everyone has maximum fun this holiday.

Older children should go out with friends and stay in groups. Younger children should be accompanied by an adult.

Set a time limit for children to trick-or-treat. Together, map out a safe route so you know where they’ll be. Remind them not to take shortcuts through backyards, alleys or playing fields.

Stay off roadways and use sidewalks when available.

Drivers, slow down and pay special attention to the many pedestrians who will be out tonight.

Children should never approach a house alone and should leave immediately if the homeowner invites them inside.

Try to get children to trick-or-treat while it is still light out. If it is dark, make sure the children are carrying flashlights that work.

Parents should inspect all candy before it’s eaten to ensure the packaging is intact and nothing has contaminated it. If a piece of candy doesn’t look right, throw it away.

Please don’t patronize stores while wearing excessive face makeup or masks.

Avoid walking near lit candles or luminaries. Wear flame-resistant costumes.

Utilize reflective tape on costumes to help drivers see you.

Deputies will be out patrolling this evening to help ensure Halloween will be a safe and fun night for all of Lexington County.
