Blowfish wrap exciting week of action as team begins second half of season

Another week of Blowfish baseball is in the books as the team reached the midway point of its season.

The team played six games last week but was on the road for four of them. Lexington went 2-4 in those games, bringing the team’s overall record to 10-15 for middle of the pack in the Western Conference of the Coastal Plains League.

Things started well when Lexington won game one of a doubleheader against Florence, 4-1. The team scored a run in each of the first four innings to open an early lead. But Florence responded in game two, beating the Blowfish 1-0.

The Blowfish made sure to put on a show in its two home games last week. The team went 1-1 on its home field, but both games were decided by one run.

Lexington welcomed Forest City to town on June 20. The game came down to the wire with the Owls pulling away in the top of the ninth.

Forest City jumped ahead in the first three innings, outscoring the Blowfish 5-1. Lexington tied the game in the fifth after a four-run inning.

Ashby Vining hit a three-run homer to pull the Blowfish within one. Walker Mitchell crossed home off an unearned run to tie the game soon after.

The Blowfish took the lead for the only time in the game after a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning by Peyton Watts. But it did not hold.

In the top of the ninth, Lawson Harrill homered, scoring two runs and giving the Owls the lead. The Blowfish failed to respond in the bottom of the inning, going three-up and three-down.

Lexington returned home on June 22 for a game against Macon after getting fried by the Bacon on the road 13-2. The Blowfish got revenge, but it took a down-to-the-wire comeback to earn the win.

The Blowfish welcomed soldiers from Fort Jackson during the game. The troops were energetic throughout the game, cheering and celebrating until the end. The biggest cheers came when Hotdog Man came around tossing wieners into the stands like t-shirts.

The Bacon led 7-2, entering the fifth inning after a five-run third inning and a two-run fourth. Lexington chipped away in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs of their own off RBIs from Breon Ishmael and  Jhonkeanu Perez.

Lexington outscored Macon 3-2 in the sixth inning to tie the game at 10. Perez nailed a ball to right field, scoring a three-run homer for the Blowfish. There was no scoring in the next 1.5 innings, setting up a walk-off scenario for Lexington.

In the bottom of the ninth, Lexington loaded the bases with two singles and a walk with just one out on the board. Ishmael stepped to the plate, fouled on the first three pitches he saw, took a walk on the fourth and then made contact to pop up the fifth for a flyout.

However, Walker Mitchell tagged up at third and took off for the home plate. Mitchell beat the throw with plenty of time to spare, walking off the game for the Blowfish. Afterward, the fans and soldiers in attendance were treated with a celebratory fireworks show.

Lexington ended the week with a 7-3 loss to Boone on the road. The Blowfish have five games on the schedule this week and got off to a strong start after a 10-5 win over Florence on June 24.
