Chapin defeats River Bluff to claim Region 4-5A wrestling title

Posted

River Bluff and Chapin boys varsity wrestling teams met Jan. 27 in The Swamp to determine Region 4-5A.

The night unfolded with as much impact as those stakes might imply.

The Eagles blasted out of the gate with three straight pinfalls to take an 18-0 lead. The Gators struck back in the fourth and fifth matchups with pins of their own to make it 18-12.

The two teams then settled in for several hard fought pairings. A pair of decision wins gave the Gators their only lead of the night coming at 19-18.

Chapin answered by winning five of the final six matches, three by pinfall, to claim the 42-28 victory and region title

According to Chapin head coach Ken Wilson, the bookends of their lineup made the difference in the win.

“We are a little bit weak in the middle of our lineup, but those first few pins lit the fire and got us all going, and I knew once we got past a few weight classes we were going to be okay,” He said after the match. “Our upper weights are really tough.”

River Bluff head coach Storm Nelson acknowledged the results were not what they were expecting to see at the end of the match.

“We have a younger squad in certain areas,” he said. “But a couple of guys who were our key matchups that we had as winning, we didn’t get the job done and that is what it came down to tonight.”

Chapin will be a number one seed in the Upper State and host two Upstate teams on Feb. 4. The runner-up Gators are second in the region and will play host to the third-place team out of Region 6-5A.

In other wrestling, Lexington defeated Dutch Fork 59-16 to clinch third place in the region. They will face the second-place team out Region 5-5A at the home of the Region 6-5A champion.
