Having an opportunity at a third state American Legion title in six years has run into a second-round roadblock for Chapin/New-berry Post 193/24.
It dropped the opening game of the Best-of-Five Series to Greenwood Post 20 6-4 at homepark Smith Road Complex at Newberry College.
Chapin/Newberry fell behind 3-0 before Preston Farmer scored on a passed ball in the bottom 4th. Greenwood added a run in the top of the fifth, before Chapin/Newberry answered with an RBI single by Robert King of Chapin High School.
Post 20 posted two runs in the top of the seventh to go up 6-2. Post 193/24 mounted a 2-out rally in the bottom half of the inning, as Farmer drove in a run and King scored on an error.
The game ended on a strikeout by Tanner Folk.
Game Two took place Tuesday at Legion Field in Greenwood and Game Three back in Newberry. The series was scheduled to return to Greenwood, if necessary, for Game Four and Game Five in Newberry.
The winner advances to the state American Legion tournament starting July 25 at Spirit Communication Park in Columbia.
