Lexington District 1 Chief Financial Officer John Butler plans to retire June 30.

A Certified Public Accountant and Lexington High graduate, Butler led the district through 2 bond referendums and oversaw a new payroll/human relations system.

Superintendent Greg Little reflected, “We are thankful for everything that Mr. Butler has done for our district and for his service to our students and our community.”

In 1979, while a University of South Carolina student, Butler began as auditor and evening manager for the Cox Hotel Associates.

After graduation, he joined the state Auditor’s Office as an auditor.

He has worked with the stater Department of Education and in 1987 joined Lexington 1.

Butler earned many awards including the SC Association of School Business Officials’ Outstanding School Business Official of the Year and the Association of School Business Officials International’s Distinguished Professional Eagle Award.

He was the Lexington 1 Educational Office Professionals’ Administrator of the Year in 2016.

The district will advertise the opening for Chief Financial Officer and create a succession plan.
