Columbia student charged with threatening Lexington County schools

The same 15-year-old who was charged for a rash of school threats last week in Richland County has been charged with threatening two schools in Lexington County.

River Bluff High and the Lexington Technology Center were among six county schools that responded to threats Feb. 2. Authorities had already indicated the threats were connected to the same Spring Valley High School student who was arrested last week for sending threats to several schools in Richland County School District 2.

“The student, whose name will not be released because he is under age 18, communicated electronically about a bomb being placed in the schools,” the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department writes in a release. “He has been charged with threatening the use of a destructive device, providing false information regarding a destructive device and two counts of disturbing schools.”

The student is in custody at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Richland County following his Feb. 2 arrest and is set to appear in Lexington County Family Court at a later date.

“The response to last week’s threats on the part of school administrators and law enforcement represents across-the-board coordination and the system working,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon is quoted. “Thanks to the Lexington Police Department, the University of South Carolina Police Department, the State Law Enforcement Division and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department working with us at LCSD, everyone stayed safe and each campus was secure as we did our work and conducted our investigation.”

At least 11 schools in the Midlands received threats last week, with the 15-year-old Columbia high school student being linked to most of the threats.

Authorities have yet to comment on who they believe is responsible for subsequent threats made against Meadow Glen Middle and Airport High School on Feb. 3 and White Knoll High School on Feb. 6.
