County flunks social distancing

Shame on us.

New data shows South Carolinians aren’t taking social distancing seriously.

That includes here in Lexington County.

Location data platform Unacast collects anonymous cell phone GPS information. They look at mobility based on distance traveled to see who is still making non-essential trips.

They grade each state from A to F based on how much people limit their travel.

Lexington is among 31 counties receiving an F on the scoreboard.

That means location data shows less than 25% reduction in non-essential travel.

Overall, South Carolina sits at a D-, with 25-40% decrease in unnecessary trips.

The US, with 336,283 confirmed covid-19 cases, is rated a C-.

Unacast defines essential businesses as grocery, pharmacy, and pet supply stores. Non-essential comprises all other goods and services.

SC Gov. Henry McMaster continues to advise limiting unnecessary travel and keeping at least 6 feet distance from others.

More businesses deemed non-essential were ordered closed in McMaster’s April 3 executive order.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends:

• Follow guidance from authorities where you live.

• If you need to shop for food or medicine, stay at least 6 feet away from others.

• Use mail-order for medications, if possible.

• Consider a grocery delivery service.

• Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth face cover when around others, including when you have to go out in public.
