District 2 seeks student safety

Lexington District 2 needs more parking and improved safety.

To do it, the district may acquire Walterboro Street between Fulmer Middle School and Airport High.

Acquiring the street between the two schools will not raise taxes but the cost of acquiring and maintaining the road have not yet been determined.

At its board meeting June 28, trustees decided to apply to acquire the road.

The idea has been discussed for two years, but construction at the schools finally led to a “yes” vote.

The board thinks it could improve safety and increase parking availability.

Though the district wouldn’t have to pay for the property, upkeep would be a recurring fee.

The cost will be learned as the application process moves forward, District 2 Public Information Officer Dawn Kujawa said.

Hiring an attorney to file the required legal documents will be an added expense.

The road is often used by students to cross between the schools.

The district could increase parking and improve safety by limiting traffic.

“Taking over the road also would allow us to increase parking on the Fulmer campus near the main office that probably would not otherwise be allowed,” Kujawa said.

The district needs state Department of Transportation approval to gain control of Walterboro Street “over the next many months.”
