HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER

It was Upset Sunday in Chronicle Country in soccer.

Both the Dutch Fork boys and River Bluff girls beat the defending Class 5A champions to win tournament titles.

The Silver Foxes defeated defending Gold Division champion Wando 2-1 in the final.

Damon Williams accounted for both goals for the Silver Foxes, who advanced to the Gold Division final earlier in the day with a 1-0 win over A.C. Flora at Chapin High School.

They finished the tournament 5-0 and with a margin of victory of 11-2.

More important, the victory in the final ended the longest winning streak by a boys’ soccer team in South Carolina history. The Warriors entered Sunday having won 57 consecutive games and rallied from 0-2 down to defeat River Bluff 3-2 in overtime of the semifinal to extend it to 58.

Ironically, the Gators handed Wando its last loss prior to Sunday in a 1-0 victory in “The Swamp” in the 3rd round of the 2016 Class 4A playoffs. The Gators went on to win their first-ever state title.

Earlier in the day, Hartsville claimed the Silver Division by defeating Greenwood on penalty kicks.

Over at Spring Valley High School, River Bluff High School defeated Class 5A champion J.L. Mann 2-1 to win the Viking Cup.

Nicolle Malpartida accounted for both goals in the win, closing out a tournament run in which the Lady Gators defeated St. Joseph’s (1-0), Wando (0-0, 4-3 in PKs) and Dorman (4-1) to win Bracket A and defeated Riverside 4-3 in the semifinal.

The Chapin girls’ team also went undefeated in bracket play, defeating Gray Collegiate (4-1), Mauldin (0-0, won on PKs) and Fort Mill (1-1, 4-3 in PKs) to win Bracket C. The Lady Eagles were shut out by J.L. Mann 5-0 in the semifinals.

In other soccer action, Lexington took second place honors at its annual Cats Kicks Cancer tournament. The Wildcats fell 2-1 to Dre-her in the final at Wildcat Gymnasium.

The Wildcats will once again hold season-long fundraising towards the Cats Kick Cancer campaign.
