Some might think of the flute as an instrument for stuffy classical recitals, or for merry Renaissance Fairs. It’s a more versatile instrument than those kinds of events would indicate, and no one proves that better than Birmingham, Alabama flautist Kim Scott.

Scott has spent much of her life playing smooth jazz and R&B on her flute, and it has paid off in spades.

Starting with her 2011 debut album, "Crossing Over," and breaking through with her #1 Billboard charting 2022 album, "SHINE." Kim Scott has impressed audiences across the globe in performances and on the airwaves. Known for her exceptional tone, intoxicating melodies and flawless technique, she is one of the most sought-after flutists in the jazz field.

That’s the sound and pedigree that Kim Scott brings to Chayz Lounge on Meeting Street this Friday night in a show called, “A Night of Jazzy Grooves." In addition to performing her own smooth jazz hits from her five studio albums, songs like “Back Together Again,” “It’s Your Time” and “Sweet Obsession,” Scott will explore the catalogs of other artists with covers of “I’m Every Woman,” “People Make The World Go ‘Round,” “Fantastic Voyage” and many more.

The contemporary jazz superstar has an ever-growing fan base garnered from her continued presence on the performance scene and from her visibility as radio host of the nationally syndicated, two-hour jazz program, “Kim Scott’s Block Party Radio,” which airs weekly across the world. She’s a fresh image and sound for today’s contemporary jazz scene.

Kim Scott has proven to be a mainstay in the field, not an easy task for any artist.

Ronald Jackson, journalist for The Smooth Jazz Ride, recently stated that, “Artists like Kim Scott bring an exuberance to an art form long prophesied to be a thing of the past in short order by critics. When you listen to the Pied Piper-like allure and magic of her style, you come to the conclusion that those critics couldn’t be farther from the truth.”

Her contemporaries clearly agree. Over the years, Scott has worked with Her collaborations include performances and recordings with Jonathan Fritzen, James Lloyd, Jazmin Ghent, Greg Manning and others. Scott has also performed at Blues Alley, Seabreeze Jazz Festival, Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz, Catalina Island Jazztrax Festival and the Montgomery Smooth Jazz Festival, among many others.

Perhaps the most glowing quote about Scott comes from the popular music industry-facing news site SmoothJazz.com Global, which states, “One of Kim Scott’s greatest contributions to smooth jazz is, along with compatriots Althea Rene and Ragan Whiteside, helping bring the majestic, magical sounds of the flute back to the forefront. ”

Don’t miss your opportunity to see Kim Scott do that in person. Showtime is 8 p.m., and dressy attire is required. Visit chayzlounge.com for ticket pricing and general info.
