An exciting week of high school sports action has passed, which means it’s time to announce this week’s male and female Athlete of the Week winners.
This week’s choices proved it doesn’t matter if it’s your first year of high school athletics or your last, you can still make an impact and elevate your team. A freshman football player guided their squad to its first victory this season, while a senior swimmer is finishing their career on a high note.
Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchonicle.com
Airport football freshman Jay Eady helped the Eagles win their first game this year, beating Aiken 34-16.
Eady displayed his ability to make plays in multiple ways. He scored a passing, rushing and receiving touchdown in the game. Eady finished with about 50 passing yards and over 100 rushing yards.
The Eagles entered the game against Aiken 0-3, looking for their first win and got it. Airport is now 1-0 in region play.
Airport will need their freshmen quarterback to continue improving as he gets more experience if they want to continue their positive momentum. The team will look for its second consecutive win this week against South Aiken.
Lexington swimmer Hanna Eckert earned Athlete of the Week after helping the Wildcats beat Gilbert in their midweek meet.
It was senior night for Eckert and the Wildcats. With only a few more meets left in her high school career, Eckert won two individual races and helped the Wildcats win two relays.
Eckert finished first in the 200 individual medley and the 400 freestyle. She also swam a strong leg in the 200 and 400 freestyle relay to help her team claim the top podium spot.
