Lexington County School District 1 has seven candidates running for one unexpired seat on the Board of Trustees. Last Sunday, a candidate forum was held at Gilbert High School. The candidates are Rutu Bhonslé, Jada Garris, Kyle Guyton, Jim Harpe, Brent Powers, Michael Sturkie, and Dino Teppara. The candidates each had two minutes to introduce themselves. GHS Student Body President Lexie Edwards was the moderator and the Q&A time was given by the GHS AP U.S. History and AP Government classes. The forum ended with closing remarks by GHS AP U.S. History student, Brett Spradley.

Teacher Appreciation Week was held recently in our schools. GHS teachers received a large cake from Shane Massey, and several members of Lake Murray Baptist Church made bagged candy treats for the teachers. Congratulations to GHS School Nurse, Elizabeth Clark, RN, who was honored on School Nurse Appreciation Day.

Congratulations to the Gilbert Middle School Warrior and Honor Choir, which received superior ratings when they performed at Carowinds. Afterwards, the students enjoyed the rest of the day on rides and attractions.

GMS Eighth-grade civics students visited the S.C. Supreme Court. They heard a case argued before the justices. After the hearing, the students asked the justices and lawyers questions. The students met also with Sen. Shane Massey. He spoke with them about the importance of being involved in government. Then the students ate lunch on the State House grounds.

Shiloh United Methodist Church in Gilbert hosts a “Lunch and Learn” June 12,  noon to 1 p.m. The topic is “Fun on the Farm, Home Grown Only in South Carolina.” Lunch is $10 and reservations are required by June 7. For info, call 359-7586.

Congratulations to the Gilbert House of Terror on winning 1st place in the commercial division at the Batesburg-Leesville Poultry Festival. The House of Terror has a yearly haunted house tour to raise money for 13 charities in the community.
