Gray Collegiate girls rout Class 5A number-one Spring Valley 54-23

The third time in eight days against a number-one ranked team was the charm for the Gray Collegiate Academy girls’ basketball team.

Jumping out to an early lead, the Class 2A second-ranked Lady War Eagles rolled to a 54-23 win over Class 5A top-ranked Spring Valley on Jan. 25.

It took place in Gray Collegiate’s newly christened basketball facility.

"We played with some energy and effort, finally," Lady War Eagles’ head coach Brandon Wallace said after the game. "We utilized our bigs and our inside game paid off."

Maliyiah Mason scored 11 points in the paint for Gray Collegiate and Jordan Mintz added 11, all in the first half.

The Lady War Eagles (14-6), who dropped two games last week to region rival and Class 2A number-one W.J. Keenan, smothered the Lady Vikings in the first quarter, while Diamond Tatum fueled Gray Collegiate's offense with seven points.

By halftime, Gray Collegiate stretched its lead to 25 points, leading 34-9 at intermission. Mintz hit 3, 3-pointers in the first half. Tatum scored nine points in the first half.

Gray Collegiate’s offense cooled a little in the third quarter. At the end of the third quarter, it led 43-16.

In the fourth quarter, Wallace substituted liberally, and the play was not as crisp as it was earlier in the game. Nevertheless, the Gray Collegiate head coach accomplished what he wanted.

"We want to play the right way, especially as the playoffs get nearer," he said. "We want to make sure we're clicking on all cylinders."

It was the second straight loss for the Lady Vikings in a span of 24 hours. A day after it was placed in the top position in the S.C. High School League rankings, the Lady Vikings (15-6), coached by Megan Assey, fell 60-58 to Blythewood on Jan. 24.

Gray Collegiate returns to action Jan. 27 at home against Eau Claire.
