Gray Collegiate suffers 1st loss at The Bash

It was a tough night at Columbia International University for defending SC High School League champions Dorman and Gray Collegiate Academy. 

Both top ranked teams were defeated Friday at The Bash by out-of-state schools. 

Dorman was defeated by AZ Compass Prep 59-37. A trio of players scored in double figures for AZ Compassw Prep out of Chandler, Ariz., who led the Cavaliers as many as 14 points.

Lexington High graduate and Dorman head coach Thomas Ryan is seeking to lead his team to a 5th consecutive state title. 

In the nightcap, the War Eagles suffered its 1st loss of the season by a 53-49 score to Trinity Christian.

They trailed 15-5 after 1 quarter and were behind as many as 14 points midway in the 2nd quarter.

Gray Collegiate outscored Trinity Christian 17-12 in the 3rd quarter to close the gap to 37-33. A pair of free throws by Timothy Barnes, who had a team-high 19 points, gave the War Eagles their 1st lead at 41-40 with 4:43 left in the game.

There were 2 ties and 2 lead changes over the final minutes before Jamori McDougal scored the game’s last 4 points from the free-throw line. 

Freddie Dillione led Trinity Christian with 24 points, followed by McDougal and Cam Oates with 14 each. Brandon Gardner had 11 points for Gray Collegate (7-1), which faces Cannon School at 7 pm Saturday. 

BOYS BASKETBALL

River Bluff 78, Midland Valley 34

Malachi Reeves scored 19 points, Brice Gordon had 13 and Grayson Renner added 12 as the Gators improved to 6-1 overall on Friday. 

Gilbert 61, Batesburg-Leesville 52 

Jackson Lineberty and Izayah Whiteside each scored 14 points and Darrius Wigfall added 8 as the Indians (2-1) defeated their crosstown rival.

“P-Nut” Hyland had a game-high 20 points and Tee Williams had 10 for the Panthers.

They play host to Swansea Tuesday, while Gilbert plays host to Ben Lippen Wednesday,
