The first regular season meeting of crosstown varsity basketball rivals Lexington and River Bluff produced mixed results.

The Lady Wildcats took a 50-46 overtime win over the Lady Gators, while the River Bluff boys varsity squad prevailed over the Wildcats 64-56.

In the girls varsity game, River Bluff led at halftime 22-19 on transition scoring and solid defense. After a slow start in the 3rd period, Lexington put up 25 points to tie the game at 44 at the end of regulation.

Foul shooting in overtime made the difference as the Lady Wildcats dropped in 4-6 in the extra period from the line.

Alexis Sexton was the Lady Wildcats’ leading scorer with 23 points./ Reagan Rozier led the Lady Gators with 20 followed by Samira Khalil with 12.

In the boys varsity game, the Wildcats came in with a 3-0 record on the season and established an early lead on three point shooting from Zavier Measmer and Noah Adams, who dropped in 5 3s between them in the 1st quarter as Lexington pulled out to a 20-11 lead.

Myles Jenkins took over the Gators’ offensive attack in the 2nd quarter with a 3 of his own and another score off a turnover to pull River Bluff back to within 4 points.

Malachi Reeves added a 3 and a trio of free throws in the 2nd quarter as the Gators pulled into a halftime lead of 31-28.

In the third, the Gators pulled away to their own big lead as they shut down the Wildcats’ offense by disrupting the passing lanes and scoring off turnovers.

The Wildcats made one more run in the middle of the 4th period as Cam Scott lobbed a long outlet pass to Keldric Bouknight for an easy layup to cut the Gators lead to 58-50.

Down the stretch, Lexington was unable to catch River Bluff.

Measmer finished with 18 points for Lexington. Grayson Renner had 17 for River Bluff and Jenkins finished with 15 points.

The 2 teams will meet again Tuesday in The Swamp. Tickets will be available on a limited basis online at www.riverbluffathletics.com.
