Holly W.I.R.E. (Women Involved in Rural Electrification) members with Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative will meet August 6 at 6 p.m. The guest speaker will be a volunteer with Dream Catchers: Unity in Our Community organization.

Dream Catchers is a Batesburg-Leesville based center that focuses around creating resources to help youth become leaders and responsible citizens. It uses volunteers to help shape a better community. Their goals are to prepare future leaders and to build a youth center. The members will also be bringing school supplies for Boys Farm. Prior to the program a light meal will be served.

Ladies if you are a member of Mid-Carolina and would like to attend the meeting, call Lacy Ridgell at 749-6471. Holly W.I.R.E. members are involved with community fundraisers throughout the year.

Gilbert High School and Gilbert Middle School’s bands were two of seven Lexington District One schools that received the state’s Outstanding Performance Award. This is the state’s highest award for a superior year of performances by band programs. The award is given by the SC Band Directors Association. Band directors accepting the awards include A. Hunter White from GHS, and Matthew Boiteau from GMS. The schools bands accumulated points through participation and scores earned at marching band championships, all-state and region band events, concert performance assessments, and solo and ensemble festivals.

Shiloh United Methodist Church invites the community to its August Lunch and Learn. This month there will be a walk through historic Lexington with pictures. The program will be August 14, noon - 1 p.m.  The cost is $10 dollars for the catered lunch. Please RSVP by August 9  by calling 359-7586. SUMC is at 1000 Springhill Road in Gilbert.

Beulah United Methodist Church invites children to attend its Back to School Skate Night August 5, 4:30-6:30 p.m., at Celebrations Skating Rink in Batesburg-Leesville. This is a free event. If you attend, please consider bringing a school supply item for our local schools.

The church would also like to invite seniors to its Food, Fun and Fellowship August 9 at 10:30 a.m.  Activities include bingo with prizes and lunch of hamburgers and hotdogs. BUMC is off of U.S. 378 on Beulah Church Road. For information, call 892-2842.
