The 2023 Coastal Plain League champions returned to action last weekend with a pair of games in front of their home crowd. 

The Lexington County Blowfish officially started its 10th season in the county by going 1-1 over the holiday weekend, beating the Macon Bacon on opening night before dropping a contest to the Asheboro Zookeepers.

The team opened its season on May 24 in front of a sellout crowd. The Blowfish fired the bacon 8-7 after a fiery fourth inning.

The two teams were scoreless through the first two innings while blowfish pitcher and Batesburg-Leesville alum Cade Bouknight had four strikeouts on the board.

Macon got on the board to start the third, but the Blowfish scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.

The Blowfish bats continued to find the ball in the fourth inning, scoring four more runs to take a 6-1 lead. Chapin product, Jarrett Whitley, brought his RBI total up to three for the game in this inning.

Lexington closed the game out with two more runs, coming in the sixth inning. The Blowfish were up 8-1 heading into the seventh and seemed to have the game in control, but the Bacon wasn’t as defeated as it seemed.

Macon made a strong attempt at a comeback in the final three innings. Macon scored three runs in the seventh to cut the Blowfish deficit to four.

After a scoreless eighth inning, the Bacon began putting runs on the board in the ninth. Macon got within one run, but the Blowfish secured all three outs it needed to win the game.

The May 25 game against Asheboro was a tough one for the Blowfish. The team struggled to slow the Zookeepers’ offense, falling 13-2 in eight innings.

Asheboro jumped to a quick lead, scoring runs in each of the first three innings. Entering the fourth, the Blowfish trailed 8-2.

Lexington was in action early this week, with a two-game series against the Florence Flamingos. Fans can catch the team in action again at the end of this week with three games, including a home contest against Forest City on May 31.
