Lexington County high school evacuated after receiving threat

Posted

A Lexington County high school was searched and cleared Feb. 7 after receiving a threat.

Around 10 a.m. a Lexington County School District 2 staff member forwarded a bomb threat received via email to the school resource officer, according to Ashley Hunter, a spokesperson for the Cayce Police Department.

The department was at the school within minutes to assist the resource officer on campus, she said.

Students and staff were evacuated from campus in a fire drill as a precaution while Cayce Police, aided by bomb dogs, the University of South Carolina Police Department, and the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, cleared the building.

“Our students and staff did a great job today, and we are so proud of them,” Lexington 2 writes in a release. “We also want to thank our law enforcement partners once again for their quick response to this incident.”

The district shared that as of 12:30 p.m. students and staff had begun reentering the building after it was cleared. The school resumed the day with a modified lunch schedule to ensure all students receive their meal, dismissal will remain at its normal time.

“The Cayce Police Department takes this extremely seriously. Student safety and teacher safety  is our top priority and not something that's not going to go unchecked or go without a serious investigation,” Hunter said.

The threat at Airport is the third the school has received in the last week. It joins six other Lexington County Schools and at least 11 in the Midlands that have received threats during that time. Authorities have connected most of the threats to a 15-year-old Columbia high school student, who has been charged for a handful of threats in Richland County and two at River Bluff High and the Lexington Technology Center.

Hunter said the source of the latest Airport threat remains under investigation.

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated.
