Memorial Day weekend is just a few days away, and the weather forecast, while not perfect, certainly allows for plenty of fun and family time during the day. Here’s a roundup of Memorial Day weekend activities in Lexington County and the Midlands at large.

Saturday, May 25

Bill’s Music Shop & Pickin’ Parlor on Meeting Street holds its annual Memorial Day Dance & Potluck event. Honor our nation's fallen heroes with Bill’s from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. In addition to a delicious potluck dinner and dance music from a live band, there will be a flag ceremony during the band’s intermission. Doors open at 6 p.m., and a DJ plays music until 7 p.m. The live band plays from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and the flag ceremony is at 8 p.m. Be sure to bring a dish or dessert to share. Admission is a $10 donation.

The Lexington Towne Center II on Lake Drive hosts a Memorial Day BBQ. Enjoy a plate of pulled pork, beans, slaw and BBQ hash for $10, or donate a meal to someone in need for the same price. All proceeds go to the Central Midlands Transitional Retreat, which houses and provides services for homeless veterans in the Midlands.

Monday, May 27

If you’re looking for something a little different to do on your Memorial Day Monday off, consider heading over to Craft Axe Throwing on East Main Street on the May 27. It’s a place where the only thing sharper than the axes is the appreciation for those who served. Join them Monday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. for throws, cheers and a salute to those who have made our freedom possible.

Enjoy a leisurely Memorial Day lunch cruise around Lake Murray. The Spirit of Lake Murray departs promptly at 1 p.m. and returns at 3 p.m., and guests can enjoy a full bar and a full lunch menu with indoor and outdoor open seating.

If you’re looking for something a little more reflective for Memorial Day, Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church on Leaphart Road holds a community memorial service starting at 6:30 p.m. as they remember those who gave their lives for our country. Mt. Hermon invites you to honor their sacrifice and celebrate their legacy together. They will also honor veterans and those who are currently serving, and special guests this year will be first responders in our community. There is a reception immediately following.

Friday, May 24

The Ft. Jackson National Cemetery on Percival Road invites you to help place flowers on veterans’ graves. Ft. Jackson National Cemetery is the final resting place of over 9,000 veterans, and this event reminds us of what the fun and fireworks and family are really all for.

Sunday, May 26

The Palmetto Concert Band plays a show at the Koger Center for the Arts on Greene Street. The program consists of all patriotic music favorites, and this family-friendly show is free to attend and fun for the whole family. Showtime is 4 p.m.
