After six seasons as Lexington High School’s head football coach, Perry Woolbright is leaving to return to his alma mater.
He’s been hired as the next head football coach at Clover High School, having been approved for the job during a Jan. 30 meeting of the Clover School District board. Woolbright, a 2001 graduate of the Rock Hill-area school, replaces Brian Lane who left to go to Westside High School in Anderson.
The Blue Eagles’ program is also where Woolbright’s father, Marty, coached from 1993 to 1997.
"It is an honor to be able to come back to where you played and where you've had family coach as well," Woolbright is quoted in a Clover High press release. "It is not often that those things happen in this profession.
"As a coach, to be able to tell the team that you have been where they are and that you can relate to what they are going through is huge.”
During Woolbright’s six seasons with the Wildcats, he led the program to five playoff appearances and a 38-25 record. He previously coached at Batesburg-Leesville, where he led the program to the 2014 Class 2A Division II final in 2016, and North Myrtle Beach, where he took a winless program to its best season in 11 years in 2013.
“Coach Woolbright is an outstanding addition to our football program and athletic department,” Clover Athletics Director Bailey Jackson is quoted. “He has demonstrated success at multiple schools in South Carolina and is well-respected within South Carolina high school football circles. His experiences from high school to college make him a great choice for Clover High School. I look forward to working closely with him and seeing him take our football program to even greater heights.”
An introductory press conference is planned for 3 p.m. on Jan. 31.
“My family and I cannot thank the Lexington community enough for the last six-plus years,” Woolbright tweeted. “To all my players, I have been fortunate to coach at LHS. Thank you for making lasting impacts on my life! I have been lucky to be able to be called your coach.
“To all the coaches at LHS I am thankful to have been able to be a small part of your great programs.”
