Lexington man dies after run-in with deputies

Posted

A Lexington man who collapsed Sept. 18 during an encounter with Lexington County deputies died Sept. 24 at Lexington Medical Center.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher identified the man as 34-year-old Stephen Walter Gagliani.

State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the incident and an autopsy was scheduled to determine cause of death.

Koon said Gagliani collapsed as 2 deputies used nonlethal equipment, including pepper spray and a Taser, to subdue him after he became noncompliant with verbal commands. They provided first aid to Gagliani until paramedics arrived to transport him to the hospital.

The 2 deputies responded to the area of Gagliani’s home in the 200 block of Crestridge Drive to conduct a welfare check, Koon said, after multiple 911 calls were received about a man in the road. After a brief conversation with the deputies, Gagliani became aggressive toward them.

Both deputies are on paid administrative leave, per standard procedure.
