Lexington Soccer Teams Win Tournament Titles

Posted

It was “Championship Sunday” for the Lexington High School soccer programs.

Both the boys and girls soccer teams claimed tournament titles. In the morning, the Wildcats defeated Mauldin 2-0 to repeat as the Cats Kick Cancer Kickoff Classic.

The defending Class 5A Lower State champions went 4-0 in the tournament, outscoring its four opponents 16-2

“Winning the tournament gives us an idea about the potential this team has,” Lexington head coach Will Gettys said. “Mauldin is a very good team, one of the best in the state. They have a real good chance to come out of the Upper State. So, beating a team like that shows we're capable of competing with anybody.

“That being said, we have a lot to work on. Lots of areas to improve.”

Early figures by Gettys has the tournament raising close to $5,000 this year. The money is donated to the Lexington One Educational Foundation in its efforts to aid cancer patients in the district.

On Friday, the Foundation received a $3,500 check from Lexington from sales of special bracelets.

“Hopefully, that money will ease the burdens some of the families in our community are facing,” Gettys said. “I think some of the most terrifying words any parent can hear are ‘Your child has cancer’. So, if we can do something to assist a family in that situation, we're happy to.

“I think it's our obligation to find ways to positively impact our community and it also teaches some life lessons to our players along the way.”

During the afternoon at Spring Valley High School, the Lexington girls’ soccer team defeated Clover in overtime 1-0 to win the Bracket X championship at the Lady Viking Cup.

The game was scoreless through regulation when Logan Kitts scored the Golden goal off the Trinity Broach assist at the 4:54 mark of the first overtime for the victory.

While the boys travel to Airport Tuesday for a non-region match, the Lady Wildcats head to Aiken Thursday.
