Lexington teams, Gilbert win at Christmas Classic

Cayce Roundball Classic starts Dec. 20 at Brookland-Cayce High School

The Lexington junior varsity team moved within a win away from a second straight Christmas Classic title.

The JV Lady Wildcats routed Spartanburg 55-19 at home Dec. 19 to advance to the 1 p.m. final against Westwood. Mayley Lindler scored 16 points to earn Player of the Game honors and Kate Mills had 12 for Lexington.

Lexington 50, J.F. Byrnes 46

Jenna Yanity scored six of her 12 points in the fourth quarter to earn Player of the Game honors for the fourth-ranked Lady Wildcats.

Lindsay Garner returned after missing the previous game for family reasons and finished with 11 points.

Lexington had a 30-23 halftime lead. The Lady Rebels came back and took the lead in the fourth quarter on a three-pointer by Te’Ericka Dowling. She finished with a game-high 22 points.

After two free throws by Garner tied the game at 43-43, Yanity put the Lady Wildcats ahead with her second hook layup in the fourth quarter. The Lady Wildcats would not trail again

Aaliyah Lee scored 23 points and Christayonna Johnson had 11 points for the Silver Foxes.

Gilbert 52, South Aiken 48

Taylor Spencer scored eight of her 20 points in the fourth quarter as the sixth-ranked Lady Indians rallied for the victory.

Trailing as many as six points in the final period, Gilbert got back-to-back three-pointers from Spencer and Kylie Morton, who finished with 12 points, to tie the game.

South Aiken regained the lead, but with 1:49 left, Ahleira Leaphart was fouled following a steal and layup attempt. The Lady Thoroughbreds were called for a technical foul for arguing the call and Leaphart, who finished with 14, and Morton combined for four straight free throws to put Gilbert ahead 50-47.

Spencer sealed the win with a driving, one-handed layup and earned Player of the Game honors. Gilbert (10-2) faces Midland Valley in the consolation championship at 11:30 a.m. in the new gymnasium.

Za’naiya Harrison finished with 16 points and Lauren Pope had 12 for South Aiken. It plays Columbia at 10 a.m. in the old Lexington High School Gymnasium.
