The 1.15-mile paved loop wrapping around the Lexington Mill Pond, called the Old Mill Pond Trail, is officially open and was marked with a celebration on Sept. 13.
This trail honors the nature around it with bridges, outlooks and seating areas that give walkers, runners and bikers a view of some of Lexington's finest greenery.
Situated right in the heart of the Town of Lexington, this trail is a product of the town's 2012 Vision Plan, according to a release from the town.
"These plans were greatly impacted by the 2015 historic flooding event that unfolded in the Carolinas; having caused the breach of many local dams including the Old Mill’s earthen dam," the release read. "After nine years of the pond being empty, a public/private partnership has led to this new outdoor space."
Earlier reporting from the Chronicle details the opening of the Old Mill Dam, which was completed in summer 2023 next to the Old Mill, which houses multiple restaurants and stores.
The Old Mill Pond Trail will increase pedestrian connectivity near downtown, as it links the Old Mill and its parking lots, the Reserve at Mill Landing apartment complex and South Lake Drive (near New Bethel AME Church).
