Lexington County basketball players and coaches added a new accomplishment to their resumes last week when the state’s basketball coaches announced its All-Region and All-State team selections.
Lexington’s Cam Scott earned back-to-back Region Player of the Year awards. This season he was also named the overall 5A Player of the Year.
Gray Collegiate’s Braylhan Thomas was named 2A Player of the Year. He becomes the sixth War Eagle to win the award, joining Jalek Felton, Juwan Gary, Tommy Bruner, Latavian Lawrence and last year’s winner Montraivis White.
Fellow Wildcat Jaxon Prunty, River Bluff’s Yasir Cromer and Gray Collegiate’s Trey Maddox and Ellis Graham were all selected to their classes All-State team. Dutch Fork’s Michaela Fairwell was the only girl from Lexington County to be selected to an All-State team.
“I think it’s great for them,” River Bluff head coach Ben Lee said. “Anytime you get those awards, it means a couple things. One, it highlights how hard those kids have worked, but the other thing is it means your team’s probably doing well. Teams that have success often are going to be the teams that have the kids with the awards.”
60 Lexington County representatives earned an All-Region honor as of now. That number is likely to increase when the 4A Region 4 girls team is announced once all teams are finished with playoffs.
Scott, Thomas and Fairwell, along with Northside Christian’s Cade McNeil, were named region player of the year. All four athletes led their team to the top spot and undefeated record in their regions.
These four players showed up for their teams in the biggest moments. All four programs advanced past the first round in the playoffs thanks to the effort of these athletes. They are difference-makers on the court.
Four coaches earned the Region Coach of the Year title. Dutch Fork girls coach Candace Bush and White Knoll boys coach Willie Thomas both won the award in their first season at their new program.
Bush led the Silver Foxes to a region title, dethroning Lexington who held the for five consecutive years. Thomas has led White Knoll to a dramatic turnaround, finishing second in the region at 4-4 this season after going 0-16 during the previous two years under the old regime.
Northside Christian won both the boys and girls Coach of the Year awards. Boys coach Peter Wilkerson led his team to an undefeated region record for the first time in school history, earning his second Region Coach of the Year honor.
Jordan Leath led the girls to a playoff appearance in his first year as the person in charge. The girls finished with a 14-9 overall record this season, doubling their total from last year.
“It’s always nice to be recognized for trying hard and committed to working hard with a group of girls,” Leath said. “But the main thing is that it helps me know that people recognize what we’re, starting with Northside Christian Academy girls basketball.”
The season is approaching its end. State championship games are set to begin March 1, and even though most of these players are not participating, their contributions this year did not go unrecognized.
“It’s a testament to how hard they work, how much they love being here and how they love each other,” Leath said.
