A trio of Chronicle Country athletes are among the Fall Athlete of the Year winners getting honored by the S.C. Coaches Association of Women’s Sports.

Sarah Miller (competitive cheer) of Chapin, Karlee Vardas (golf) of Lexington and Jessie Hollins (tennis) of River Bluff will be recognized in their respective sports during the Feb. 23 banquet at 1 pm in the S.C. State Museum in the Vista Room.

• SARAH MILLER - A 5-year letterman, Miller helped Chapin win its 2nd consecutive Class 5A title in competitive cheer, 11th state title in 12 years and Sourh Carolina High School League record 15th overall.

It’s also the only sports program in league history to win state titles in 4 different classifications.

“I’m so honored to receive this award and couldn’t be more grateful to have been on a team with the hardest working group of girls I know,” Miller said in a District 5 press release. “To achieve this award, I helped lead my team through the many ups and downs we had this season as we tried to maintain the title of reigning 5A State Champions. I tried to lead by example to remind my teammates that both work ethic and attitude are the key to success.”

• KARLEE VARDAS - The Georgia Southern commit won a 2-hole playoff to claim the Class 5A individual title.

Currently the 2nd ranked golfer in her junior classification in South Carolina, Vardas is the 6th Lady Wildcat golfer to win the CAWS Award, joining 2-time winner Lauren Stephenson, Danielle and Maureen Dunnagan, Sydney Legacy and last year’s winner and current teammate Isabella Rawl.

• JESSE HOLLINS - The Coastal Carolina commit made the most of her lone season with the Lady Gators.

The daughter of South Carolina and MLB player Dave Hollins, she helped River Bluff claim its 2nd Class 5A title in 3 years. Hollins also became the 1st Lexington District 1 tennis player to win an individual singles title and also played in the SCACA North-South All-Star Classic.
