October is National Dessert Month!

October welcomes us to the fall season with 90-degree days, high humidity, shorts, and flip-flop weather. This is just South Carolina weather displaying her true colors, or rather her true temperatures!

This is also National dessert month, National book month, and the very popular Toilet Tank Repair month. Ironically, it’s also World Menopause month. I would like October to at least take a “chill pill” and bring us some cool weather soon!

The Marching band season is tuning up to be a great season for Chapin. The band came in 2nd place in 3A with the best color guard, best music performance and 2nd place in percussion, at the White Knoll Silver Showcase. Congratulations!  The next competition is the Palmetto Invitational Esprit de Corp and is hosted by the Bands of Irmo. The competition starts October 6, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the W.C Hawkins Stadium, 6671 St. Andrews Rd. Columbia.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. All bags will be checked for security purposes.

Supplies for those affected by the hurricane are being collected by Carolina Light Foot Militia and can be dropped off at 1250 Lake Murray Blvd., 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Water, Gatorade, nonperishable foods, hygiene products, baby food, diapers cleaning products garbage bags, pet food, brooms, and more are needed.

Sweet potatoes are

the perfect fall food, and Chapin Ruritan Club is selling 20-pound boxes for $12 and 80 pounds for $22.  To order, call Albert Amick at 803-345-5060. Delivery will be November 1 at the Ruritan clubhouse.

Want to know how to pay for college? Parents of high school seniors in the Irmo and Chapin area can come to the financial aid basics workshop.  Michael Sapienza, who has worked as a financial aid administrator at three different colleges,  will present the program.  Costs of college, FAFSA, and finding and applying for financial aid are just some of the topics on October 8,  7-8:30 p.m., at New Heights Church, 5501 Broad River Road, Columbia.

The event is being organized by the SC Association of Independent Home Schools. For more information, call 803-814- 0353 or email bmartin@scaihs.org.

Do you like chili?  The Fall for Chapin Street Festival and Chili Cook Out is the place you need to be October 10. The event starts at 5 p.m. on Beaufort Street. Tickets are $10 and proceeds go toward the Greater Chapin Community Endowment. There will also be a craft fair, farmers market, and live music.
