The Pelion Branch of the Lexington County Public Library System received a Book Award grant for its S. C. Plants the Seed program this summer. The award is funded through Library Services and Technology Act, funds that are provided by the Institute for Museum and Library Services and administered by the S. C. State Library.

The grant will provide the library with children’s books on topics related to food and nutrition used as giveaways at three educational programs this summer. The books are appropriate for all grade levels and include books in Spanish. The projects’ goals are to increase access to fresh, local food options for rural patrons and give away nutritional literacy books to families with children.

As part of the program, Pelion Branch Library has partnered with local farmer Catherine Porth from Grannies Grub Co-Op, who will provide produce to sell this summer at the library July 18 and August 1. A Nutrition Educator from SC DHEC will be present to talk to families and offer a fun nutritional snack. Children will be able to choose a free book and listen to Storytime with Ms. Jill. Children can also explore the library’s square foot garden and register to plant a vegetable in the fall garden.

Rescue Church will

hold a spaghetti dinner and bingo night July 6, mailto:kaycollings@earthlink.net 5-9 pm, at the Pelion Community Center. $10 includes dinner, raffle and 2 bingo games; additional cards are $2 each. Everyone is invited.

Pelion Library will host Solar System Exploration June 28 at 10:30 am. The SC State Museum will guide participants through space to learn about the star of our solar system and the planets that revolve around it. This event is for grades K-5. Charcoal Drawing 101 will be held June 29 at 10 am for ages 18 and up. This event is presented by Jeffrey Miller; registration is required. Cook the Book club meets July 2 at noon with Caribbean Food as the menu.

The Pelion Senior Center will hold its monthly birthday party June 28.

Congratulations to Pelion High students who received scholarships. The Columbia International University Merit scholarship was awarded to Raynie Sky Arender, who also won the Columbia International University Track and Field scholarship. The Anderson University Grant, the Anderson University scholarship, and the Anderson University Gold Grant were awarded to Caroline Faye Barnes.
