The Irmo Okra Strut returned for its “48th strut” Sept. 23 and 24, kicking off Saturday with the annual parade, which was filled with local businesses, nonprofits and politicians. Soon-to-retire state Rep. Chip Huggins served as the grand marshall.
In Irmo Community Park, the town’s marquee annual event continued amusement rides and other family fun. Musical entertainment included the S.C. Philharmonic’s Conduct the Phil program, in which members of the general public get a chance to lead members of the state’s preeminent orchestra. There was food and drink, with, of course, an emphasis on the festival's titular vegetable (though the boats of fried okra seemed somewhat smaller and more expensive than in years past).
This year’s Okra Strut began to make use of new land purchased to expand the Community Park, utilizing some of the recently cleared land to help with parking.
