People from around the Midlands came to West Columbia for a day of amateur racing, arts and crafts, and STEAM activities. According to organizers, Kinetic Derby Day “spurs creative thinking, competition, and family fun as teams come together to build unusual vehicles and awe-inspiring art installations.” A Ferris wheel was set up at the corner of State and Meeting, with a view of the Congaree River and the Columbia skyline, down the hill from where soap box derby competitors rolled to the finish line. Mayor Tem Miles presented checks to winning teams. The event was back for the first time in two years, having been canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
