Public schools must offer 5 days in-person

Posted

The state’s public schools are now required to offer inperson classes 5 days a week.

SC Gov. Henry McMaster signed a bill into law last week for the requirement starting April 26.

The SC House approved S.704 Wednesday, a Senate measure that mandates that all SC school districts offer 5-day in-person instruction.

But 2 other parts of the bill will benefit current and retired teachers.

The 1st prevents “dual modality” teaching without extra compensation. That means that for teachers who are asked to teach both inperson and virtually, they will have to be compensated for the extra time they spend preparing online classes.

The bill states teachers will not be allowed to teach both in-person and virtually at the same time “unless it is reasonable and necessary due to extreme and unavoidable circumstances in order to ensure that all students have access to highly qualified instructors.”

The 2nd allows retired teachers to return to the classroom to ease teacher shortages and earn up to $50,000 per year without having to change their retirement allowance.
