Mission Over, Mission Accomplished! “A Universe of Stories” Summer Reading Program at the Gilbert-Summit Branch Library will soon end. Children and teens blasted off into a Universe of Stories in early June. Enrollees began their journey with a mission launch party and a walk through a scale model of the universe. Each week the children enjoyed a space-themed program, which included Galactic Bookworms with Larry the Duck and Tim Sonefelt, Space Station Harmony presented by the Columbia Marionette Theater, Solar System Exploration by the SC State Museum, Suzette Hawkins read stories about voyages beyond the sun, moon and stars, and Professor Whizzpop read stories about alien invasions, black holes and exploring the universe.

This week, August 1, Porkchop Productions will present Chicken Little, and August 10 the children will officially end their mission with a party of galactic activities. Children and teens earned scores by reading the required books to receive awards. Those awards included free food items from local restaurants, Summer Reading medals or lapel pins, books and a ticket to a Lexington County Blowfish Baseball game. Librarian Louise Taylor said attendance was very good this year. For information on programs at the library call 785-5387.

Lexington County School District One Board of Trustees, approved the promotion of Jennifer A. Steiner to assistant principal at Gilbert High School. Steiner was a digital learning coach at River Bluff High School and serves on the school’s instructional and schedule design teams. She has worked for Lexington District One for her entire career.

Cross Road Baptist Church will have a free Back to School Bash for children August 11 at noon. The church will provide lunch, water and free school supplies. The church is at 525 Main Street in Gilbert. For information, call 892-4559.

Donna Neel, Director of the Gilbert-Summit Senior Center, says the members ended July with an historical presentation on Lexington County by Lexington County Museum Director J.R. Fennell. If you are a senior age 60 or above, you are eligible to join. For information, call 892-5745.

Birthday wishes this week go to: Krista Bashline, Noah Kneece, Lynn Shealy, Ella Woodruff, Bill Watford, Dale Gossett, Barbara Brown, Andy Riddle, Ralph Bellamy, Nancy Barnhill, Nick Ulmen, Billy Brown, Spencer Provost, Sam Drake, Harry Woodard, Donald Woosley, Jr. Randy Shaw, Kay Brown, Dorothy Oswald, and Reba Frazier.
