An anti-religion group is fighting to keep school boards from praying.
The Freedom From Religion group’s challenge to prayer at school board meetings now may be headed for the US Supreme Court.
California judges have sided with the group in ruling no prayer at meetings.
Other California judges who were not involved in the ruling say they find no constitutional violation in boards praying.
The Chronicle has asked our county’s 5 school boards if they open their meetings with prayer. If not, was it on advice of counsel or for a constitutional concern?
As the schools are on winter break, we do not expect a response until schools reopen this month.
The Supreme Court has ruled that Congress and other legislative bodies can open with prayer because all of them are adults.
California judges ruled that school boards have influence over non-adults, their young students, and should not open with prayer.
The Chino, CA, school board maintains it, too, is a legislative body that deals with financial and operational issues, not direct involvement in classrooms or their students.
