6 students transported to hospital following Lexington 2 Oct. 22 school bus accident

On Oct. 22, a Lexington County School District Two school bus was involved in an accident on U.S. 321 near Woodcote Drive.

According to Lexington Two officials, a car hit the side of the bus, which was carrying 36 elementary students from Wood Elementary at the time. Six students were taken to the hospital for further medical assessment, however, not all were transported by ambulance.

Emergency services, including the Lexington County Fire and EMS, Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, South Carolina Highway Patrol and school and district administrators quickly responded to the scene.  

Families of the students were informed, and those that were cleared for discharge were picked up to go home at the scene.

According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, in 2022, there were 468 school bus collisions statewide. Four of these collisions resulted in fatalities, four causing serious injuries, 76 leading to other injuries and 384 involving only property damage.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol will be investigating the crash.
