Soccer duo shines to earn Athlete of the Week

Posted

The high school soccer season is rolling along as local teams and players fight for wins.

With the region season finally here, each game holds a significant amount of weight and can affect the final standings. This week’s Athlete of the Week winners scored multiple goals in region games to lead their teams to wins.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.

Holden Carruthers

River Bluff junior Holden Carruthers was voted Athlete of the Week after helping the Gators defeat Irmo in a 4-0 shutout win.

Carruthers scored three of the team’s four goals for his second hat trick in a game this season. He previously scored three in a 9-1 win over Lugoff-Elgin. He is one of the team’s most consistent scorers, with 10 goals so far this season.

The Gators are 6-3 entering this week and 2-1 in region games. Carruthers’ contributions will be crucial to the team’s success down the road.

River Bluff will be tested this week with games against formidable Lexington and Dutch Fork teams.

Adriana Dunat

Lexington’s Adriana Dunat helped the Wildcats defeat Dutch Fork 7-1 and was named Athlete of the Week.

The junior forward scored three goals in the win, recording a hat trick. It was her first hat trick this season, and her second during her three-year varsity career.

Dunat has been Lexington’s leading goal-scorer this season. She began this week with eight through nine games. At the season’s midway point, she is on pace to match her goal total from last season at 17.

Lexington entered this week 5-3-1 overall and 2-1 in region games. The team will be back in action this week with two more region games. More big games from Dunat could have the team in prime position for success.
