Spanish immersion classes open

Lexington District One is passing along the opportunity for parents of 5K students to place them in the partial immersion program, which has openings for this school year at Red Bank Elementary in Spanish immersion and other schools and languages in the district. The immersion programs focus on subject areas, but teach half the day in the target language, which means the students learn the language as they go, not as a separate class.

I’ll offer a personal recommendation for the Red Bank Elementary Spanish immersion, as both of my daughters participated in it and have benefited greatly from the language learning over the years. Contact Dr. Liza Speece at 803-821-3812 for information or Harriet Cotterman at 803-821-1057 to register your child.

St. James Lutheran Church will hold its monthly food pantry August 20, 10-11 am. For info, call (803) 359-2122.

August 20 is also the first day back at school for area students (teachers have already been back a week to get ready for the new school year), so the already bad traffic in Red Bank is about to get a little worse. Remember to watch for school buses and walking students in the mornings and the afternoons and be prepared for delays.

Happy birthday this week to Tiffany Stanley, A.J. Berry, Jr., Joel Smith, Leann Crim, Marcus Crim, Linda Boatwright, Doug Huffines, Sybil Roland, Chris Garoppo, Ronnie Aguilar, Sandra Voelker, Mark C. Kyzer, Buck Smith, Shelia Barrier, Mel Carlyle, Judy Matthews, Elizabeth Roe, Erika Goff, Rosemary Miller, Jerry Conyers, Debby Hatchell and Crystal Boatwright.

Happy anniversary this week to the following couples: Benny and Gale Hunnicut, and Bryan and Bonny McCarty.
