All-Chronicle Country region has 4 undefeated teams

THURSDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK

The number 4 is pretty prominent this week.

While it’s called Week 3, this is actually the 4th week of Chronicle Country high school football.

The number of winless teams is 4 - Northside Christian, Pelion, Swansea and W.W. King.

Pelion will get the first crack at victory with a Thursday game at Saluda. The next night, Swansea heads on the road to face Wade Hampton.

Northside Christian will play its first-ever game on school grounds against Dorchester Academy.

W.W. King Academy will play at home against Palmetto Christian Academy. On the flip side, the only remaining undefeated Chronicle Country teams reside in this week’s honoree section:

QB TEAMS OF THE WEEK - Region 5-5A

The All-Chronicle Country region is off to a 12-1 combined start this season. The five teams - Chapin (2-0), Dutch Fork (2-0), Lexington (3-0), River Bluff (3-0) and White Knoll (2-1) - had a combined margin of victory of 33.2 points in their five Week 2 victories.

QB PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Aveon Smith (White Knoll)

The junior Timberwolves’ quarterback accounted for four touchdowns and 170 total yards in the 49-20 win over W.J. Keenan.

BACK ON PRIMETIME

It’s another all-Lexington County football affair on Sonic Friday Night Rivals on WACH-57. For the second time this season, the Gilbert Indians are the co-featured team, this time at home against Airport.

The Indians hold a 4-2 advantage in the series. The game can be streamed at www.wach.com .

HALL OF FAMERS

Former Batesburg-Leesville and Northside Christian Academy head coach Jerry Brown was named to the 2018 class of S.C. Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame class.

Currently the head coach at Wade Hampton High

School in Hampton County, which

plays host to Swansea Friday,

Brown has won 267 games in 32

seasons. He’s won five state

championships at Spring Valley (1988), Berkeley (1994, 1996, 2009) and Batesburg-Leesville (2013) and was named Palmetto State Coach of the Year five times. The ceremony takes place Dec. 7 at the Landmark Resort in Myrtle Beach. Recently, Irmo head coach Reggie Kennedy was named an inductee into the East Clarendon Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Clarendon County Hall of Fame three years ago. Phil Strickland, a 2017 S.C. FCAHOF and forner Batesburg-Leesville head coach, leads Newberry into Chapin Friday night.

BY THE NUMBERS

Dutch Fork has won 14 consecutive games. During that span, the Silver Foxes have scored 50 or more points six times and posted four shutouts. This season, they have outscored their two opponents 121-0...River Bluff has already matched its combined win total (3) from the previous two seasons. The Gators have also scored 60 or more points twice this season...Northside Christian Academy and W.W. King Academy have been outscored by a combined score of 181-0 this season in four total games... Pelion is looking to end a 6-game losing streak...White Knoll quarterback Aveon Smith has rushed for 396 yards and 8 TDs and completed 34-56 passes for 471 yards and 5 TDs this season...Gray Collegiate quarterback Hunter Helms is 63-105 passing for 792 yards and 5 TDs. Teammates Arthur Albritton and Armani Williams each have 39 tackles...River Bluff running back Braden Walker has rushed for 496 yards and 6 TDs. Lexington is 3-0 for the second straight year. The last time the Wildcats accomplished this feat in back-to-back seasons was 2010 and 2011.
