Students host benefit for beloved coach

AROUND CHAPIN AND IRMO

Teachers have taught us to read, write, and do math. We may not remember all of the things they taught us, but we remember our teachers and how they changed our lives. Chapin loves Coach Sullivan! The legendary teacher is battling cancer and is undergoing chemo treatments.

Coach Sullivan has touched many lives and helped students laugh their way through tough math classes with his stories and “Sullivan-isms.” Students remember his story about tackling someone so hard, the guy’s glass eye fell out. The phrase, “Tough Mustard” has stuck with many alumni from his teaching days.

Sullivan wore many hats, track coach, and defensive coordinator for girl’s basketball, tennis coach, and football coach, math teacher, and trombone player for the Chap-in Jazz Band. A fundraising event, organized by former students, will be held June 23,  7-11 pm, on Beaufort Street. They want to honor him and raise funds to help pay for cancer treatment with T-shirts, bake sale and a silent auction.

Judy Bolton Jarrett, another much loved Chapin English teacher, is celebrating the 28th anniversary of her ArtCan Studio in Chapin. Thank you, Judy, for giving Chapin art and class. May you have many more years.

Come and run in the 5K benefit for The Hewitt foundation at Saluda Shoals on June 30. The Hewitt foundation is in memory of Parker and Haley Hewitt, who died in a tragic automobile accident. All proceeds go toward community projects and improving the lives of families in need. Visit www.hewittfoundation.com for more details.

Do you have boys who love to build? Chapin Library has a Lego Mania program just for them. Join the block building party June 15 at 3:1 pm.

Interested in the history of South Carolina? Colonel John Miles, USMC retired, will talk about superstitions and mysteries in our history June 14 at 5:30 pm.

We Care in Chapin’s inventory has reached low levels and is in great need of food for families in the area. Collection bins are located at the Chapin Library, Crooked Creek, and at local churches.

Are you interested in hosting a foreign exchange student? The students bring their own spending money, speak English, and have insurance. Contact local midlands representative Tricia Goss, at 321- 947-7671 or email triciacaseusa@yahoo.com
