How to spot utility scams

Posted

Have you ever been targeted by a utility scam? According to Dominion Energy of SC, criminals are constantly developing new scams to trick you out of money or information.
The FTC has warned about imposter scams for various utilities, not just electricity.
Some scams claim you overpaid and ask for a bank account or credit card number to “refund” your money. Others claim you have a past due bill and threaten to disconnect your service. Some may show up at your home claiming they need payment or to repair problems you didn’t report.
Another scam red flag is demanding payment via gift or prepaid debit cards, wire transfer or even cryptocurrency.
Dominion Energy says their employees won’t call and demand payment or ask for money orders or prepaid debit or gift cards.
Dominion personnel will not ask for payment in person or to enter your home without proper ID, an appointment, or a reported emergency.
Actions to take
• Don’t push buttons on automated scam prompts or give scammers any information.
• Don’t give payment info over the phone to someone who calls. Hang up and call the number on your bill. When speaking with the representative, report the scam and verify the status of your account.
• Report the scam to the FTC at 877-382-4357 or https://reportfraud.ftc.gov and to the SC Department of Consumer Affairs at https://consumer.sc.gov/identity-theft-unit. Reporting scams to your utility company and the authorities will help protect others and help catch these criminals.
