What would you do if you were Trevor Lawrence?

Would you turn pro or return to give Clemson more shots at national titles?

Would you risk a careerending injury in college football and miss out on millions of dollars as a pro?

Consider his situation.

Clemson’s star quarterback has sidelined himself with a covid-19 diagnosis.

He has missed a pair of important ACC games against Boston College and Notre Dame where his absence was apparent.

But as part of the covid-19 protocols, he has to pass a series of cardiac exams.

Head coach Dabo Swinney said Lawrence will return for the Florida State game.

Lawrence will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in marketing in December with another year of eligibility.

He is 31-1 as a starter at Clemson – the only loss against LSU in last year’s national title game.

The year before, he led Clemson to a 44-16 victory over Alabama in the national title game.

He is a contender for the Heisman Trophy this season after losing it to Joe Burrow. Clemson is loaded with talent and has a great shot at a series of national titles.

Lawrence can skip his final season at Clemson to enter the NFL draft as a strong 1st round pick next spring.

Most NFL executives say they expect Lawrence to enter the 2021 draft. He’s done just about everything you can do in college football but coach the team.

As a strong leader, he is an assistant coach without pay.

The prospects

Next spring, whoever has the most dismal record and the #1 overall pick is likely to go for Lawrence.

At best, that could be the New England Patriots and coach Bill Belichick.

Belichick is the best pro football coach still working and has the Super Bowl victories to prove it.

The Patriots have fallen hard since they let Tom Brady go to Tampa Bay.

Lawrence could be the next Tom Brady in Boston.

At worst, it could be the winless New York Jets.

The Jets haven’t been a good team in years. The way they play is terrible.

They are so inept that their fans have lost hope.

Their belief in quarterback Sam Darnold has not panned out. But with the team he has to work with, who can blame him?

A waste?

Would Lawrence have any more success than Darnold? Probably not.

Probably not. At Clemson he has been

At Clemson he has been surrounded with great talent and savvy coaching.

He would have neither at the New York Jets.

Frankly, I would rather see Lawrence play another season at Clemson than be wasted on a bunch of bums like the Jets – no matter how many millions they agree to pay him.
