Residents in Lexington were literally left in the dark for several hours Friday night.

A South Carolina Electric and Gas spokesman said an estimated 1,000 customers were left powerless after a vehicle apparently crashed into a utility pole.

An SC Highway Patrol report confirmed the accident took place at the intersection of Midway Road and Hope Ferry Road.

According to the report, a driver of a 2003 Chevrolet S10 disregarded a stop sign at the intersection and collided with the pole. No injuries took place and the driver was expected to be charged with driving too fast for conditions.

Among the places nearby affected by the outage was River Bluff High School football stadium off Corley Mill Road. It resulted in a 20-25 minute delay of the first round of the Class 5A playoff game between the host team Gators and Conway.

Once power was restored, the Gators went on to defeat Conway 35-19.
