The Lexington County Coroner’s Office has identified a man who was found dead in West Columbia over the recent holiday weekend.

“Michael Lawrence Crolley, 62, of West Columbia was pronounced dead at the scene due to multiple blunt force injuries,” the office posted to Facebook on July 5.

Crolley was found July 3 near the 2600 block of Augusta Road, per the coroner’s office and the West Columbia Police Department, which said they responded to a call about an injured individual.

The 2600 block of Augusta Road (U.S. 1) ends at the road’s intersection with Interstate 26.

“Shortly after arrival on scene, law enforcement and EMS determined that the individual was deceased,” West Columbia police notes in a press release.

Neither the department nor the coroner’s office has specified if foul play is expected, but the police have requested anyone with information regarding the investigation contact them at (803) 794-0721 or submit an anonymous tip through Midlands Crime Stoppers at crimesc.com or through the P3 Tips app.

The coroner’s office noted that the state Law Enforcement Division is assisting with the investigation.

“We called SLED to assist with the crime scene,” explained West Columbia Police Captain of Investigations Matthew Deas. “It is common for municipalities to work with SLED in certain circumstances. We routinely work with their investigators on cases like child deaths, arsons, and some death investigations.”

Deas said that no more information is available at this time, as the investigation is still active.
